Heat the oven to 180C and line two 20cm sandwich tins.
Whisk the flour, cocoa, sugar, bicarbonate of soda and a pinch of salt together.
Beat in the eggs, milk and oil until smooth, then divide between the tins.
Bake for 25-30 minutes until risen and springy. Cool in the tins for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a rack.
For the icing, melt the chocolate and butter together, then leave to cool and thicken to a spreadable fudge.
Sandwich the cakes with some of the icing and cover the top and sides with the rest.
